Deep North Atlantic Last Glacial Maximum Salinity Reconstruction

چکیده

Abstract We reconstruct deep water‐mass salinities and spatial distributions in the western North Atlantic during Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 19–26 ka), a period when atmospheric CO 2 was significantly lower than it is today. A reversal LGM meridional bottom water salinity gradient has been hypothesized for several reconstructions. Such potential to influence climate, ocean circulation, by increasing thermal energy carbon storage capacity of ocean. To test this hypothesis, we reconstructed based on sedimentary porewater chloride profiles north‐south transect piston cores collected from Atlantic. determined density‐based method 3.41–3.99 ± 0.15% higher modern values at these sites. This increase consistent with: (a) 3.6% global average change expected eustatic sea level rise, (b) northward expansion southern sourced water, (c) shoaling northern (d) Atlantic's LGM.

North Atlantic Deep Water Production during the Last Glacial Maximum

Changes in deep ocean ventilation are commonly invoked as the primary cause of lower glacial atmospheric CO2. The water mass structure of the glacial deep Atlantic Ocean and the mechanism by which it may have sequestered carbon remain elusive. Here we present neodymium isotope measurements from cores throughout the Atlantic that reveal glacial-interglacial changes in water mass distributions. T...

Causes of Reduced North Atlantic Storm Activity in a CCSM3 Simulation of the Last Glacial Maximum

The aim of this paper is to determine how an atmosphere with enhanced mean state baroclinicity can support weaker baroclinic wave activity than an atmosphere with weak mean state baroclinicity. As a case study, we consider a Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) model simulation that has been previously documented to have reduced baroclinic storm activity, relative to the modern day climate (simulated by ...

Surface currents in the western North Atlantic during the Last Glacial Maximum

[1] During the last ice age, the density gradient across the Florida Current was reduced, implying a reduction in the flow of the Gulf Stream through the Florida Straits. Here we investigate the possibility that a significant portion of this wind-driven western boundary flow bypassed the Florida Straits during glacial times due to either changes in bathymetry induced by the sea level drop or ch...

North Atlantic storm track changes during the Last Glacial Maximum recorded by Alpine speleothems

The European Alps are an effective barrier for meridional moisture transport and are thus uniquely placed to record shifts in the North Atlantic storm track pattern associated with the waxing and waning of Late-Pleistocene Northern Hemisphere ice sheets. The lack of well-dated terrestrial proxy records spanning this time period, however, renders the reconstruction of past atmospheric patterns d...
